Departing Nafplio

Sadly, today was departure day. We took one last morning hike along the waterfront from Arvanitias Beach to Neraki Beach. We had done this in the evening, but it was great to do this in the early AM, prior to making the 2+ hour car ride towards Athens.

Corinth Canal

Our first stop was at the Corinth Canal. A bad social media reference (David's fault) took us to Diolkos, which had a wooden water bridge crossing, but we clearly knew we were in the wrong place. In the distance, about 15 mins away was the Old Isthmus Bridge (this was the right place). The canal was really incredible to see, with some people choosing to bungee jump off a secondary bridge.

A few facts about this canal: it connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. Completed in 1893, it cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the Greek mainland. The canal was dug through the Isthmus at sea level and has no locks. It is 6.4 kilometres (4 miles) in length and at 24.6 metres (80.7 feet) wide at sea level, it is impassable for many modern ships.

We ate souvlaki for lunch, and then got back on the road for the airport

Athens

We arrived at our hotel around 4PM and met up with our guide Savvos and our travel group. Everyone seems very nice, and we are pretty well represented geographically across the states. One of the couples told us about their experience at a nearby rooftop bar, so we had to go check it out ourselves. The views of the Acropolis at sunset were really spectacular. Since we didn't have a reservation, we got a back table, that overlooked the National Greek Orthodox church of Athens. It was absolutely fine, as we could easily view the Acropolis to our right.

What's Next

Tomorrow we have a panoramic city tour with a local guide and will also visit the Acropolis museum.
